Tell us about your journey into the Oregon Laborers, what made you choose to become a construction craft laborer apprentice?

My mother is local 701. She knew I was struggling with my full-time job and only making 11 dollars an hour. Supporting three kids as a single parent I was having a hard time with the occupation I had previously before becoming a member in the local 737. Anyways my mother invited me to an Oregon women’s in trades convention. Where I met Ivan and signed up to join the local 737. I became a laborer because I don’t mind working outdoors and I like the physical work. but also I was ready to gain and learn all the skills in laboring as well as being knowledgeable about safety.

How has being in the apprenticeship program impacted your life?

Becoming an apprentice laborer has changed my lifestyle in many ways. I work harder at almost everything. I sleep better at night because I know I can support my kids in anything they want to do after high school. I plan stuff out better and safely too.

What advice would you give others who are interested in joining our program or are just starting out?

I would say go for it. if you know what skills you want to obtain in construction. Come to the laborer’s work hall and or go online and sign in. Never stop asking questions. Benefit yourself and it will benefit the rest of our union members too. Feel the Power!
