KYLE MITCHELL

TERM: 4th Term Apprentice

Tell us about your journey into the Oregon Laborers, what made you choose to become a construction craft laborer apprentice?
I moved from job to job. Never knowing what I wanted, and not making much money. Wanting a family but not feeling like I could fully support them. My life was very interesting just only 5 years ago. I struggled with drugs and homelessness. Today I wake up and help build a new life and sometimes, I help build homes and construct new buildings for others.

How has being in the apprenticeship program impacted your life?
I have a path now. I have a structural life today. I get to make decent money and give my son things that I couldn’t without this career path I chose.

What advice would you give others who are interested in joining our program or are just starting out?
Get ready to work hard, but in the end, it’s so worth it. You take your check home and know you made a difference. I’ve gained so much from this. I don’t worry about my bills. I don’t have to worry about figuring out how I’m making rent that month. It’s comfortable.
