SHAWNTE HARRIS
TERM: 1st Term Apprentice
Tell us about your journey into the Oregon Laborers, what made you choose to become a construction craft laborer apprentice?
I had different and random jobs that weren’t paying enough and were not the best. After talking with my mom and my uncle from Texas who is in the union down there, I got interested in applying. I did it to change my life and that of my children (family).
How has being in the apprenticeship program impacted your life?
Have been in the program for about 6 months now and everything is better. I have been able to get a house and my family is way better off. I like knowing that I am doing things the right way in life. I am a Blue Collar American!
With being in the union I pay attention to things I didn’t before. Like the Infrastructure Bill that just passes. We will have secure jobs for many years.
What advice would you give others who are interested in joining our program or are just starting out?
If you are thinking about it, do it! Apply yourself! You won’t regret it. It’s more than just the money. This opens up positive opportunities in your life. If I can do it, anyone can do it. It’s never too late.
